Sometimes when you have not quite fallen asleep we hear you in a faint cry. Not a cry that pierces our ears. Or a cry that lasts a moment or two but no more. No this is a faint but persistent one that says "Where are you? I need you? I'm scared." When we quietly creep into your room you are not standing but sitting eyes still closed, clearly confused. Quiet comfort, a nice long hug. A tuck "back" in and some gentle back rubs are all you need. You suckle your thumb; at first with rapid desire; but that quickly turns slow and without pace as you begin to fall back into sleep. Over the hump. We sneak out as quietly as we entered and you are at peace again.
Although moments like this are unexpected to an evening or even a distribution I have come to appreciate them for what they are. An important display of our connections. How our relationships work. How knowing what you need and being able to provide it effortlessly is one of the greatest feelings. One hundred percent worth everything it has taken to get here.
